Abstract
A passive approach to development of instrumentation has stymied advancement in hydrological sciences. I will consider the questions of how to identify and address opportunities for new instrumentation. My personal WUMPT (Wonder, Unknown, Matter, Potential, and Team) model for discovery is presented, where development of creative curiosity is linked to scientific success. Examples are drawn from my projects weighing trees in Africa, watching soils swell in Chile, designing an observatory in China, studying the dynamics of the stratification of the Dead Sea in Israel, and looking at groundwater-surface water processes in Luxembourg. I will argue that the “if it isn’t fun, don’t do it” protocol for project selection not only makes for a delightful career, but may well be the best thing you can do for the world.
